Sam Engelson is an Associate Attorney with the firm. Originally from Plano, Texas, Sam fell in love with Chicago while attending The John Marshall Law School and made the city his home.
Sam’s practice focuses on representing hard-working clients treated unfairly by their employers. His work primarily involves filing FSLA and related state law claims in Illinois federal district courts.
Sam’s clients span across all industries, including those that work in the restaurant, retail, health care and auto industries as well as office and corporate jobs. He respects and admires his clients’ strong work ethic and devotion to their families. Sam finds significant gratification in recovering unpaid wages and damages for his clients. He commits fully to helping every client receive the full compensation he or she deserves.
In each case Sam handles, he takes a very client-focused approach. He gets to know the client and understand the client’s family and life circumstances. The discussion always includes listening to the client’s concerns and frustrations. When a client decides to move forward with a claim, Sam makes sure the case progresses as expeditiously as possible. Getting full payment for work done is extremely important to every client, and that makes it just as important to Sam.
The focus on employment law flows naturally from Sam’s college years at The University of Kansas, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management with an emphasis on entrepreneurship. That interest blossomed during law school. Sam discussed his interests and career goals with those around him, and a close family friend and legal mentor encouraged Sam to pursue wage and hour law. Billhorn Law Firm provided the perfect opportunity for Sam to pursue his aspirations.
In law school, Sam served twice as a legal writing teaching assistant to two of his former law professors for the second semester legal writing skills class for first-year students. While in law school, Sam worked as a legal intern for a large publicly-traded logistics company and as a law clerk for one of Chicago’s premier employment law defense firms, where he gained additional appreciation and exposure to employment law. During his final semester of law school, Sam participated in his school’s Business Enterprise Law Clinic, helping a start-up technology LLC with business formation. He also was a member of Phi Alpha Delta, the largest professional law fraternity in the United States.
Sam and his wife Kayla live in Lakeview with their dog Nugget, a Maltese-Poodle mix. They love Chicago and especially enjoy all the festivities and activities that are all around. Nugget appreciates their frequent trips to the dog park. Sam is an avid sports fan, including basketball and baseball. He particularly relishes cheering on Kansas basketball and football and the Chicago Cubs.
